Kerala

Can a Gen Z leader reshape local governance? Kerala has just provided an answer with the election of a 21-year-old as a municipal chairperson. Diya Binu Pullikkakandam has scripted history by becoming the youngest municipal chairperson in India. She was elected to lead the Pala municipality in Kottayam district. Her rise came after weeks of political uncertainty following a fractured verdict in the civic elections.

She won from the 15th ward as an independent candidate, securing 131 votes. Her father, Binu Pullikkakandam, and her uncle, Biju Pullikkakandam, also emerged victorious as independents. Their success placed the Pullikkakandam family in a decisive position in the 26-member council.

No political front secured a clear majority in the elections. The Left Democratic Front won 12 seats, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front secured 10 seats. Four seats went to independent candidates. The Pullikkakandam family extended support to the UDF. This backing enabled the Congress-led front to form the governing body. Congress rebel Maya Rahul was appointed vice chairperson.

An Economics graduate from Madras Christian College, Diya said her focus would be on basic development and long-term planning. She also said she would pursue higher education while carrying out her responsibilities as municipal chairperson.
