Jagdeep Dhankhar Steps Down as Vice President of India

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on Monday, saying he was stepping down due to health reasons. Jagdeep Dhankhar, in his resignation letter, thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and all Members of Parliament for their continued support. He cited health reasons as the main factor behind his decision to step down. Dhankhar becomes the third Vice President in India’s history to resign before completing his term, following V. V. Giri in 1969 and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in 2007.

What’s Next After Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation?

According to Article 68(2) of the Indian Constitution, the election for a new Vice President must be held as soon as possible after the post becomes vacant. The elected individual will serve a full term of five years from the day they assume office. Until then, the outgoing Vice President may continue to hold office to ensure continuity in constitutional duties.
