Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was finally released from Sitapur Jail in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, after serving 23 months in prison. Hundreds of supporters had gathered outside the jail, eagerly waiting to welcome the 77-year-old leader. His son, Adeeb Khan, was also there to greet him warmly.

Khan’s release follows his acquittal last week by a special MP-MLA court in a 17-year-old case related to a road blockade and damage to public property. The original incident in 2008 involved a protest near Chhajlet police station, which escalated and caused damage to public property.
He was also granted bail in other pending cases. His release, which was scheduled for 8 am, was delayed due to an unpaid fine of Rs 8,000 in two separate cases. Once the fines were cleared, Sitapur Jail processed his release. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were imposed in the city in anticipation of his departure.
