When is Janmashtami 2025? Check Date, Puja Muhurat and More!

Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most popular Hindu festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In 2025, the festival begins on 15 August and continues for two days. Gokulashtami, another name for the festival, is observed with fasting, prayers, and devotional singing. Devotees decorate homes and temples with colours and lights, offering special prayers to Laddu Gopal or Bal Gopal. The festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil, as Lord Krishna defeated the demon Kansa, bringing joy, hope, and devotion to followers across India.

Janmashtami Puja Muhurat

According to the Drik Panchang, the Ashtami Tithi begins at 11:45 p.m. on 15 August 2025 and ends at 9:34 p.m. on 16 August 2025. Devotees observe fasts and perform Puja during this period, breaking the fast at midnight to mark Krishna’s birth. Homes and temples are adorned with vibrant flowers, glowing lights, and statues of Laddu Gopal. Bhajans, kirtans, and other devotional activities fill the night, creating a spiritual and joyous atmosphere for families and communities across India.

Dahi Handi Celebration

The second day of Janmashtami is celebrated with the well-known festival of Dahi Handi. A pot filled with curd or butter is hung high, and groups form a human pyramid to break it, especially in Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi. This custom highlights Krishna’s fondness for butter and his playful, mischievous behaviour during childhood. Music, dance, and cheers accompany the event, making it lively and festive. Families and communities gather to enjoy the celebration, spreading the joy of devotion and togetherness.
