Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi met in a closed-door discussion to decide the next Chief Information Commissioner. The high-level panel will also select information commissioners for eight vacant posts in the Central Information Commission. With thousands of RTI-related cases pending and only two commissioners currently in office, today’s meeting is crucial to restoring the CIC’s full strength and speeding up appeals.

The CIC is responsible for handling appeals and complaints from RTI applicants. With eight positions vacant and over 30,000 cases awaiting action, the government aims to fill key roles urgently. The DoPT received 83 applications for the top post and 161 for the information commissioner roles. After shortlisting by a search committee, the PM-led panel makes the final recommendations, and the President appoints the selected candidates.
