US Planning New ‘C5’ Superclub With India, Russia, China and Japan

C5

The United States is reportedly considering the formation of a powerful new international grouping called the ‘C5’ or ‘Core Five’, with India, Russia, China, Japan, and the US as its members. Although there is no official confirmation yet, American outlet Defence One has claimed that the Trump administration is examining this idea as part of a broader realignment of global partnerships.

An Unpublished Security Strategy

According to Politico, the idea for the C5 originates from an extended, unpublished version of the National Security Strategy that was reportedly prepared by the White House last week. While Politico has not independently verified this longer document, Defence One previously reported its existence. This version allegedly outlines a plan to create a hard-power coalition centred on the world’s major nations with populations exceeding 100 million.

A New Grouping

If formalised, the C5 would function similarly to the G7, holding summits on critical issues. However, unlike the Europe-dominated and democracy-based G7, this platform would represent major powers driven by strategic influence rather than political ideology. The first agenda item, according to reports, would focus on Middle East security, particularly efforts to normalise ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

White House Denies Existence

Despite the reports, the White House has firmly rejected the claim of any alternative, private, or classified version of the 33-page National Security Strategy. Press Secretary Hannah Kelly stated that no such extended document exists, adding to the ambiguity surrounding the C5 proposal.

‘Trumpian’ Approach

National security experts suggest that the idea reflects a worldview consistent with former President Trump’s strategic thinking—non-ideological, power-focused, and centred on cooperation among global heavyweights. Torrey Taussig, a former director for European affairs on the US National Security Council, noted that the absence of Europe in the proposed grouping would signal that the administration sees Russia as a major power with its own sphere of influence.

A Major Departure From Earlier China Policy

Michael Sobolik, who previously served as an aide to Senator Ted Cruz, pointed out that such a coalition would represent a significant shift from Trump’s earlier stance on China. Instead of framing China as a competitor, the C5 would place Washington and Beijing in the same strategic club—an unexpected departure from previous policies.
