Former Indian cricketer and Men’s Selection Committee chairman Ajit Agarkar has shed light on the reasoning behind this decision. While Rohit led India to a Champions Trophy victory, Agarkar emphasised that the change wasn’t about past achievements—it was about planning for the future, noting,At some point, a team has to look forward,with a focus on grooming Shubman Gill for long-term leadership.

Rohit Sharma’s Leadership Shift

Agarkar also explained that giving Shubman Gill as many matches as possible before major tournaments was crucial to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting the team balance. Managing three captains across formats is never easy, and the board aimed to maintain continuity while keeping experience intact. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain in the 15-member squad, signalling a gradual shift in leadership while safeguarding India’s batting strength.
