Delhi Traffic Police Issues Advisory on Routes Amid Heavy Rain

Delhi Traffic Police

Amid continuous heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Yamuna, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for commuters to navigate the affected areas safely. The Loha Pul, also called the Old Iron Bridge, will remain closed from 4 pm on Tuesday until further notice after the river crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Authorities have alerted residents in low-lying areas after drone footage showed the Yamuna surpassing the warning level. Commuters are advised to plan their travel, use public transport where possible, and allow extra time for potential delays.

Routes to Avoid

The Delhi Traffic Police advisory highlights specific routes to avoid in the rain to minimise congestion and ensure safety. Traffic from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Old Delhi railway station, and the Red Fort is rerouted via Hanuman Setu to Outer Ring Road and Raja Ram Kohli Marg. Vehicles from Rajghat and Shanti Van are diverted through Bela Road and Shanti Van Chowk to Geeta Colony Road. Travellers from northeast and east Delhi areas, such as Shahdara, Seelampur, Akshardham, and Mayur Vihar, are being directed to use alternate routes through Raja Ram Kohli Marg and Geeta Colony Road.

Government Response

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited flood-affected areas near the Old Iron Bridge and Geeta Colony Flyover, assuring relief and support for affected families. With water levels expected to exceed 206.50 metres, authorities are coordinating with the Central Water Commission and neighbouring states for assistance. Residents near river embankments are being relocated to safer locations. To safeguard the public, police and the Irrigation & Flood Control Department are patrolling vulnerable areas around the clock.
