Indian authorities have blocked the release of the critically acclaimed film ‘Santosh‘, directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) board cited reasons like misogyny, Islamophobia, discrimination against Dalits and violence within the Indian police force, for the ban.
CBFC bans ‘Santosh’
The movie follows a young widow who becomes a police officer in northern India and investigates the murder of a Dalit girl. It highlights systemic issues within law enforcement. The movie has been getting international recognition, including awards at Cannes and being the UK entry for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. The CBFC banned the film in India due to objections over its portrayal of the police. When the filmmakers refused to make the extensive cuts demanded by the CBFC, they withheld the film from releasing.
