Mahashivratri 2025: Foods to Avoid During Fasting

Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri is one of the most sacred and significant celebrations in India. Celebrated mainly by the Hindu community, Mahashivratri falls during the month of Phalguna on the 14th day of the waning phase of the moon. In 2025, Shivratri is being celebrated on February 26, 2025. On this day, many people observe fasting as a way to naturally detox the body, and it also has religious significance for good health and prosperity.

Fasting habits vary from person to person, but there are common dietary restrictions to follow on this day. This will help maintain healthy eating habits and ensure clean fasting throughout.

What not to eat during Mahashivratri fasting?

  1. Regular Salt: Common salt or white salt is not allowed to be consumed during the fasting period, instead it is suggested to consume sendha namak (rock salt) during the fasting period, as it is a pure and sattvic form of food.
  2. Onion or Garlic: It is advised to eat only sattvic and pure food during the Mahashivratri fast, and both Onion and Garlic are considered Tamsik as per Ayurveda and must be avoided.
  3. Non-veg food: Foods such as fish, chicken, meat, eggs, or seafood are strictly not allowed to be consumed during the fast.
  4. Certain vegetables: While most vegetables are allowed, brinjals, mushrooms, and leafy greens are generally avoided as they are not considered suitable for fasting.
  5. Caffeine or Alcohol: It is strictly a no to consume caffeine, tea, or alcohol as it can dehydrate the body, making your energy levels low.

Practice healthy and clean eating habits during fast to keep your body energised, and also follow a detox diet while praying to god for good health.
