Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has said he would “seriously consider” returning to India if guaranteed a fair trial and dignified treatment. Speaking on a podcast with Raj Shamani, Mallya broke his silence in a rare public appearance.

“If I have the assurance of a fair trial and existence, I will think about it,” he said. Mallya faces charges of fraud and money laundering related to unpaid loans from Indian banks. Responding to labels like “fugitive” and “thief,” he insisted he didn’t flee. “I flew on a prescheduled visit and didn’t return for valid reasons,” he added. “You can call me a fugitive, but where is the theft?”

Mallya also claimed that banks have recovered Rs 14,100 crore from him, over double his original debt of Rs 6,203 crore. He alleged being singled out unfairly, unlike other defaulters who, he said, received favourable settlements.
