Saroja Devi, First Female Superstar of Kannada Cinema Dies at 87

Veteran actress B. Saroja Devi, a monumental figure in Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 87 in Bengaluru due to age-related ailments. She was found unconscious at her Malleswaram residence and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Known as the ‘Multilingual Star,’ Saroja Devi featured in over 200 films spanning Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. She began her career in 1953 with ‘Sri Rama Pooja’ and gained fame through films like ‘Mahakavi Kalidasa’ and ‘Amarashilpi Jakanachari’.

In Tamil cinema, her on-screen pairing with M.G. Ramachandran became iconic, with 26 collaborations. She also worked with stars like Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesan. In Telugu and Hindi, she acted alongside legends such as N.T. Rama Rao and Dilip Kumar. Saroja Devi was the first Kannada actress to be honoured as Chaturbhasha Taare, a title reflecting her legacy across linguistic boundaries. She was also a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
