Director Vivek Agnihotri has stirred fresh debate ahead of the release of his upcoming film The Bengal Files. Agnihotri claimed that The Bengal Files will not Release in West Bengal as theatre owners are refusing to screen it. The filmmaker alleged political pressure behind the move and questioned the unofficial ban on the film.

The film, based on the 1946 Direct Action Day and Calcutta riots, has already sparked backlash, with critics accusing it of fueling identity politics. Agnihotri revealed that even during the trailer launch in Kolkata on 16 August, police allegedly intervened under “political pressure” and stopped the event.
This latest controversy has once again put the spotlight on freedom of expression. Despite the hurdles, bookings for The Bengal Files have begun nationwide.
