A blast occurred at the Sigachi Industries pharmaceutical plant at Pasumylaram in Telangana’s Sangareddy district on Monday, June 30. The explosion took place at a spray-dryer unit used for processing microcrystalline cellulose. The blast caused a massive fire and also caused the collapse of the three-storey factory.

By Tuesday morning, the death toll rose to 35-40, with three dozen injured and about 27 workers still missing in the debris. Several eyewitnesses claimed that the blast was so intense that victims were thrown into the air. Rescue teams, including NDRF and SDRF units, continue to sift through the debris. The state government has announced a relief package, saying the families of the deceased will be given Rs 1 lakh and the injured Rs 50,000. State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha told the media that about 90 workers were working, and the entire roof of the factory was blown away.
