New Year’s tragedy in Switzerland
The blaze broke out in the middle of the night at Le Constellation, a busy bar in the upmarket Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana. The fire erupted as revellers had gathered at the venue to usher in the New Year. According to authorities, identification is ongoing, and formally confirmed casualty figures are yet to be released.
A massive emergency response was immediately deployed. The scene was attended by helicopters, ambulances, police, and fire services. Nearby hospitals were rapidly overwhelmed, with ICUs and operating theatres becoming overcrowded. A reception centre and helpline have been established to assist relatives of those affected.
Police confirmed that several foreigners were among the victims. The area surrounding the bar has been sealed off. Investigators are continuing their inquiry, and the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
