Kerala Film Body AMMA Gets First Woman President Shwetha Menon

Amma

For the first time in its 30-year history, women have taken charge of Kerala’s most influential film body, AMMA. Breaking decades of tradition, actress Shwetha Menon has been elected president, while Kukku Parameswaran has become general secretary. This is a historic milestone for the Malayalam film industry, breaking the long-standing male dominance in leadership roles.

Shwetha Menon Defeats Devan

In a closely fought election, Shwetha Menon edged past actor-politician Devan with 159 votes, while he secured 132. Parameswaran achieved a more decisive victory with 172 votes. Alongside them, Jayan Cherthalla and Lakshmi Priya were elected vice-presidents, Unni Sivapal as treasurer, and Anjiba Hassan as joint secretary.

Despite his defeat, Devan showed grace and dignity by administering the oath. He even hailed Menon as “AMMA’s mother,” calling her victory a proud moment for the organisation.
