Shreyas Iyer has decided to step away from red-ball cricket. He left the India A camp during the series against Australia A and later wrote a letter to the BCCI. In the letter to Chairman Ajit Agarkar, Iyer said his back is not strong enough at the moment for long-format matches such as Tests and the Ranji Trophy.

Iyer informed the selectors that he cannot stay on the field for more than four days. In Ranji games last season, he managed by taking short breaks, but this is not possible in Test cricket. He will now go to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for treatment and recovery. Iyer will continue to play white-ball cricket, where he has been in good form for India and the IPL.
