The Maharashtra government is set to approve a petition by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan, seeking a refund of around Rs 9 crore. The return relates to an overpayment made by the couple for the property on which their landmark mansion, Mannat stands.
The iconic bungalow Mannat stands on land originally leased by the state government to the previous owner. When the original owner decided to sell the land, the Khans purchased it and paid a conversion fee to the state, changing the property’s status from a Class 2 leasehold to a Class 1 freehold.
Spanning over 2,446 square meters, the property was officially transferred to the Khans through a registered agreement. Before the transfer, the state, as the original titleholder, imposed an unearned income charge based on the difference between the market value and the ready reckoner price.
