Prada Drops ‘Made in India’ Chappals for Rs 84,000

Prada

Luxury brand Prada is turning heads with a new sandal collection inspired by India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappals. Priced at Rs 84,000, each pair will be handcrafted in Maharashtra and Karnataka through partnerships with local artisans. The move follows backlash over earlier designs that resembled traditional Indian footwear. With only 2,000 pairs available, the collection blends Indian craftsmanship with Italian techniques, while a three-year training programme will empower artisans, preserve heritage skills, and ensure fair pay.

Launching in February 2026, the exclusive sandals will be available in select stores worldwide and online. Kolhapuri chappals, known for their hand-tooled leather, have seen declining demand, but this collaboration could revive interest, boost artisan incomes, and highlight ethical, heritage-inspired fashion. It represents luxury with a conscience, combining style, tradition, and global visibility.
