Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on December 16, 2025, received Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia. The award recognised his role in strengthening ties between India and Ethiopia. It was presented by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at a special ceremony held at the Addis International Convention Centre.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the honour acknowledges PM Modi’s contribution to deepening the India–Ethiopia partnership.

PM Modi’s Ethiopia Visit
PM Modi arrived in Addis Ababa from Jordan as part of his three-nation tour. He was accorded a warm ceremonial welcome. In a rare gesture, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally received him at the airport and drove him to his hotel, highlighting the importance of the visit. Modi later met the Ethiopian leader at the National Palace. The two discussed bilateral cooperation, attended a traditional coffee ceremony, and visited the Science Museum.
