Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have once again erupted into deadly clashes along their shared border. Over the weekend, Taliban forces claimed responsibility for killing 58 Pakistani soldiers and seizing 25 army posts in overnight operations. They accused Pakistan of violating Afghan territory and airspace with strikes earlier in the week. Pakistan strongly denied these claims, stating its forces only acted to defend against cross-border fire.
The clashes caused heavy losses on both sides. Afghan officials confirmed nine of their soldiers were killed, while 30 Pakistani troops were reported wounded. Fighting broke out in several districts of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including Chitral, Bajaur, Mohmand, and Kurram. According to Pakistani security sources, troops responded with heavy weaponry against Afghan positions near Nangarhar province.

Pakistan-Afghanistan War
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the confrontation started after explosions in Kabul and Paktika, which Afghan authorities blamed on Pakistan. He described the strikes as ‘unprecedented and violent,‘ warning Islamabad of consequences if such actions continued. Mujahid confirmed nine Afghan soldiers were killed in the Pakistan-Afghanistan clashes, adding that fighting stopped only after mediation by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan’s Response
In Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared there would be ‘no compromise‘ on Pakistan’s defence. He accused Afghan authorities of sheltering militants who use Afghan soil to stage attacks inside Pakistan. The Pakistani army also stressed that it would take ‘necessary measures‘ to protect its people.
Meanwhile, border tensions began affecting daily life and trade. Authorities shut the Torkham and Chaman crossings, the main routes for goods and travellers, causing major disruptions. The Pakistan-Afghanistan border, called the Durand Line, has long been disputed, and ties have remained tense since the Taliban took over in 2021.
