Just when the world had started recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, a new variant of the deadly virus has surfaced. A new variant, identified as the JN.1 COVID-19 19 is causing a significant surge in cases across Asia. Cases of this new variant are surfacing in countries like India and Singapore.
What Is JN.1 COVID 19 Variant?
This new COVID-19 variant comes from a sub-lineage of the BA.2.86 strain. It was first detected in the United States in September of 2023. After that, cases have been reported in multiple countries, including China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest’ due to its rapidly increasing spread. All current evidences suggest that JN.1 does not pose a higher global public health risk.
