‘Trading with Russia Could Trigger Sanctions’ NATO Chief Warns India, China, Brazil

NATO

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a strong warning to India, China, and Brazil. He said they could face U.S. secondary sanctions recently proposed by Donald Trump if Russia refuses to enter peace talks with Ukraine. After meeting with Trump, Rutte called on the three countries to push Russian President Vladimir Putin toward accepting a ceasefire. Trump has given Russia 50 days to begin negotiations or face 100% tariffs and broader penalties. The warning comes as all three countries continue strong trade ties with Moscow, especially in oil and gas.

Rutte noted that India, China, and Brazil have maintained close energy and trade relations with Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He called on their leaders to speak directly with Putin and help push for a ceasefire. The warning comes after Trump revealed plans to supply Ukraine with advanced weapons like Patriot missiles. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers are pushing for steep tariffs—up to 500%—on nations that continue to trade with Russia.
