Every year on 29th August, India proudly celebrates National Sports Day. This year, National Sports Day will be celebrated from 29th to 31st August. Eminent sportspersons, public figures, and citizens from across the country will take part in the festival. They will take to the sports fields and participate in sporting activities. From state capitals to district-level events, the entire nation will come together to celebrate the spirit of fitness and community.
National Sports Day Theme
The National Sports Day 2025 celebration theme is “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein.” This initiative is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Fit India Mission. It encourages dedicating at least 60 minutes daily to physical activity.
The aim is to build awareness about preventing lifestyle diseases through fitness and sports, as well as to promote the Paralympic ideals of courage, determination, inspiration, and equality.
History and Legacy
It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the ‘Wizard of Hockey’, Major Dhyan Chand. He was born in 1905, and his unmatched skill helped India win its first Olympic gold medals in field hockey between 1928 and 1936. His legacy not only shaped India’s sporting history but also continues to inspire generations.
Since its first observance in 2012, National Sports Day has become a platform not only to remember Dhyan Chand’s contributions but also to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of Indian athletes. The President of India also confers awards such as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna.
The government uses the occasion to highlight sports schemes like Khelo India, announced in 2018, which aim to strengthen the country’s sporting culture. With the 2025 theme, this year’s National Sports Day carries a powerful message.
