Supreme Court Notices Mohammed Shami, Questions Wife on Rs 4 Lakh Monthly Maintenance

The Supreme Court has issued notices to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, approached the court seeking higher alimony. She challenged a Calcutta High Court order that set her monthly maintenance at Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter, arguing that the amount was insufficient. The Supreme Court reviewed the arrangement and questioned whether an increase was necessary.

The High Court had earlier fixed the total maintenance at Rs 4 lakh per month. Jahan had requested Rs 10 lakh — Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their daughter — but the court did not grant the full amount. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami continues to play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, taking 15 wickets in five innings, though he missed selection for the upcoming home Test series against South Africa.
