Meghalaya Murder: How a Single Error Exposed Sonam And Her Lover

Meghalaya

What began as a honeymoon turned into a chilling murder mystery. Newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi from Indore travelled to Meghalaya on May 20, hoping for a romantic getaway. But days later, Raja’s decomposed body was found in a gorge near Wei Sawdong waterfall.

One clue that led to Sonam’s arrest

The investigation revealed that Sonam, along with her lover Raj Kushwaha, had plotted the murder. Kushwaha allegedly hired three men to kill Raja. Sonam convinced her husband to choose Meghalaya instead of Kashmir, where the murder was planned.

The breakthrough in the case came with one clue: a machete found near the body. Meghalaya Police noted it wasn’t the kind typically used in the region, raising suspicion of outsiders’ involvement. This led investigators to dig deeper into Sonam’s phone records.

Local tour guide’s statement

Also, another incident that helped the police with the investigation was local tour guide Albert Pde’s statement. According to him, he spotted Raja and his wife, Sonam, on May 23 at around 10 AM near the Mawlakhiat area, accompanied by three unidentified men who spoke Hindi. This lead was verified through call data records and location mapping. It was concluded that it was the last confirmed moment Raja was seen alive.

They discovered she had contacted one of the accused just before the murder. She was later traced and arrested at a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh after asking to borrow a phone, which helped police track her. The case continues to unfold, leaving the country stunned.
