Bollywood star Deepika Padukone’s exit from the film ‘Spirit’ has stirred heated debate. The backlash she received for reportedly asking for an eight-hour workday and fair pay exposed a clear streak of misogyny on social media. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, without naming her, accused an actor of unprofessionalism and “dirty PR games”, a jab many believe was aimed at Deepika. Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam has now defended her.
Mani Ratnam is Team Padukone
In an interview with News18, Mani Ratnam was quoted saying, “I think it is a rightful demand. I’m glad she’s in a position to ask for it. I think as a filmmaker, you will take that into consideration when you cast.” He added that such boundaries must be respected. Deepika also reportedly wanted a share in profits and refused to speak Telugu lines, preferring dubbing.
Triptii Dimri has now replaced her in ‘Spirit’. Vanga also took a swipe at an unnamed actor, accusing them of leaking the film’s plot. The fallout has sparked a wider discussion on how women in the industry are often penalised for asking for basic professional respect.
When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA(Non Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, You’ve ‘DISCLOSED’ the person that you are….
