Shubman Gill has now become the third Indian Test captain to score fifty or more at number four, two or more times, while playing against England in England. He achieved the feat on the first day of the second Test at Edgbaston. On July 2, only Virat Kohli and Vijay Hazare achieved this milestone. Gill was unbeaten on 57 as India crossed the 200-run mark by the 60th over.

England captain Ben Stokes had won the toss and opted to bowl first. KL Rahul was dismissed early on 9, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair putting on 80 runs for the second wicket. Nair was dismissed just before lunch. Jaiswal played a solid 87-run knock before losing his wicket in the second session. Gill and Rishabh Pant added 47 runs for the fourth wicket, helping India bounce back and build a strong position.
