India Lose to South Africa by 408 Runs, Biggest Defeat in Test History

India

The Indian cricket team suffered its biggest-ever home defeat by runs, losing to South Africa by 408 runs in the second Test at Guwahati. The loss also sealed a 0–2 series sweep for Gautam Gambhir’s side. Chasing a massive target of 549, India folded for just 140 in 63.5 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja top-scoring with 54.

This 408-run setback surpassed India’s previous worst home defeat, a 342-run loss to Australia in Nagpur in 2004. It now stands above other heavy defeats, including the 341-run loss to Pakistan in Karachi (2006) and Australia’s 337-run win at Melbourne (2007).

Batting Woes Continue

Despite lifelines on Day 5, including chances for Sudharsan and Kuldeep, India faltered again. Sudharsan managed 14 off 139 balls, while Kuldeep added just 5. Across four innings of the series, the team crossed 200 only once, underlining a disappointing batting performance on a largely stable Guwahati pitch after the minefield at Eden Gardens.
