Asia Cup 2025 ended in drama as the Indian cricket team refused to accept the trophy and medals from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, in Dubai. India had already informed officials beforehand that they would not take any awards from Pakistani authorities due to ongoing tensions.
Asia Cup Trophy Controversy
The post-match presentation was delayed by nearly an hour. Following India’s refusal to accept the trophy, ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi abruptly removed the trophy and all individual medals from the stage, leaving the Indian players with no physical awards. This sudden move forced the prize distribution ceremony to be called off midway, surprising players and officials. Despite repeated requests from the BCCI, Naqvi took the awards with him, creating a major controversy, while the Indian team celebrated near the podium without the physical trophy.
Suryakumar’s Reaction
Suryakumar Yadav, captain of the victorious side, expressed his disappointment, saying the team had earned the title and that their “real trophies” were the hard work and journey throughout the tournament. Also, he announced that he would donate his match fees to the Indian Army.
BCCI’s Strong Response
The BCCI has reacted strongly, confirming they will launch a strong protest at the upcoming ICC conference in November, demanding that the trophy and medals be returned to India. The incident highlighted tensions between the sides, as India had already refused customary handshakes during the tournament. Despite no physical trophy, the Indian team celebrated its ninth Asia Cup triumph with enthusiasm on the podium.
