India to Produce Its First Passenger Aircraft in Partnership with Russia

India

In a historic move, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has partnered with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce the SJ-100 passenger aircraft in India. This marks the first time a complete passenger jet will be manufactured domestically since the Avro HS-748 project ended in 1988.

India’s Aviation Milestone Unfolds

The twin-engine, narrow-body SJ-100 will support India’s UDAN scheme, enhancing short-haul regional connectivity across tier-II and tier-III cities. With a capacity of 103 passengers and a range of 3,530 km, the aircraft is designed for efficiency and performance in all climatic conditions.

The partnership reflects India’s growing strategic ties with Russia amid United States trade tensions and strengthens the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, promoting self-reliance in the civil aviation sector.
