You Think AI is Supporting You? It’s Actually an Emotional Trap

AI

One evening, I found myself doing something unexpected. I was confiding in an AI chatbot. I’d been feeling low, like I was stuck in a friendship where I cared more and was unsure of where my life was heading. Not knowing who to turn to, I poured my thoughts into the chatbot, and honestly, it felt comforting at first. The bot listened patiently, told me it was okay to feel hurt, and seemed to truly understand.

But something felt off. After a few chats, I noticed I was not getting better. AI was always encouraging—maybe too much. It was reassuring, but I started to wonder if it was just echoing what I wanted to hear. I’m not alone in this. These days, more and more people turn to chatbots when they are feeling overwhelmed—after a breakup, an argument, or just during tough moments. A friend of mine used one after a fight with her roommate. She said it made her feel validated and understood, but she also admitted something interesting: if it had been a real person, they might have said something a little tougher—something that made her think more deeply.

Trapped in a Comforting Loop?

AI chatbots are designed to be friendly, polite, and on your side. And while that feels good in the moment, it can sometimes cloud real insight. Growth often comes from uncomfortable truths—the kind that challenge us to change. And let’s be honest, that kind of truth usually doesn’t come from a bot. It comes from someone who knows you and cares enough to be honest.

Real Growth Needs Real Talk

Using a chatbot to vent or feel hurt isn’t a bad thing, but depending on it too much might slow down emotional growth. Healing often requires more than just kind words. It takes reflection, honesty, and sometimes hard conversations. Things are best shared with real people. Next time I feel stuck, maybe I’ll still type it all out, but I’ll also call someone who tells me what I need to hear, not just what I want to hear.
