A historic Gaza-Israel agreement has outlined a detailed roadmap to end hostilities and ensure the safe return of all hostages. According to the agreement, the first critical step involves the immediate cessation of the war upon the Israeli government’s approval. This marks a significant move towards stabilising the region and opening channels for humanitarian relief.
Following this, the agreement emphasises the “immediate commencement of full entry of humanitarian aid and relief” into the Gaza Strip, ensuring that civilians affected by the conflict receive essential support without delay. Simultaneously, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) will withdraw to lines specified in an attached map.
This withdrawal is to occur after the announcement by former President Trump and within 24 hours of the Israeli government’s approval. Importantly, the agreement ensures that the “IDF will not return to areas that have been withdrawn from, as long as Hamas fully implements the agreement,” establishing a mutual commitment to maintaining peace.
Release of Hostages Within 72 Hours
The most pivotal element of the agreement is the release of hostages. Within 72 hours of the IDF’s withdrawal, all Israeli hostages, both living and deceased, held in Gaza are to be released.
The agreement also includes the establishment of a secure information-sharing mechanism to track any deceased hostages or remains of Gazans held by Israel that were not retrieved within this timeframe. This mechanism ensures that the remains are fully and safely exhumed and released, with Hamas committing to exert maximum effort to fulfil these obligations.
Prisoner Exchange to Run Parallel
Parallel to this, Israel will release a corresponding number of Palestinian prisoners listed in the agreement. The exchange of hostages and prisoners will be conducted discreetly, through mediators and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), without any public ceremonies or media coverage.
International Task Force to Monitor
Finally, the agreement establishes a task force comprising representatives from the United States, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and other agreed-upon countries. This task force will follow up on implementation, coordinate with both sides, and ensure that the ceasefire, humanitarian aid, withdrawal, and hostages’ release are executed effectively.
This comprehensive agreement reflects a concerted effort to bring stability, restore human dignity, and ensure accountability, with all parties committed to completing these actions within a clear timeline.
