Sri Lanka’s former President and senior opposition politician Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested on Friday over allegations of misusing public funds during his tenure. He served as President from 2022 to 2024 and faces accusations related to spending state money to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony in London after an official US visit.
First Former Head of State Arrested
Wickremesinghe was taken into custody by the Financial Crimes Investigations Department and later brought to court. This marks the first time a former Sri Lankan head of state has been arrested, highlighting the country’s growing focus on accountability and financial oversight.
