The IPL 2025 witnessed another rare ‘retired out’ moment during the match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mohali on April 8. CSK was chasing a huge target of 220 runs and in the 18th over, they made a bold move by calling back opener Devon Conway, who had scored 69 runs off 49 balls. He walked off the field without being dismissed to make way for a more aggressive batter. The decision was meant to increase the scoring rate in the final overs. However, it didn’t work out. CSK could only manage 201 runs and suffered their fourth defeat of the season. Earlier in the tournament, Mumbai Indians (MI) also retired out Tilak Varma from a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Many fans confuse retired out with retired hurt, but the two are different.
What is retired Out?
Retired out is a tactical decision when a batter walks off voluntarily out of the field and cannot come back. This rare move is slowly becoming part of T20 strategies. A batter is retired hurt when they leave the field due to injury or illness and can return later if they recover.
