Here’s Why Donald Trump Didn’t Get the Nobel Peace Prize

US Ambassador

Donald Trump had been openly campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize for years, often saying that many people believed he deserved it. His hopes grew after helping broker a historic peace deal between Israel and Hamas to end the two-year war in Gaza. The plan paused fighting, released hostages, and was seen as a step towards ending a major humanitarian crisis. Despite these efforts and extensive media attention, Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize. Instead, the award went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, recognised for her efforts supporting a peaceful transition to democracy.

Donald Trump Misses Nobel Prize

  1. The Nobel Peace Prize looks at work done in the previous year. In 2024, Trump had been elected but had not yet taken office.
  2. Nominations for 2025 closed in January, shortly after he returned to the White House, and his name was not on the final official list.
  3. Trump had been nominated several times in the past by global leaders, including those from Russia, Israel, Cambodia, Ukraine, and Europe, but past nominations do not guarantee a win.
  4. The Nobel Committee focuses on democracy and long-term peace. Machado’s work promoting democracy in Venezuela fit this focus, while Trump’s efforts, though high-profile, did not align with the committee’s criteria.
  5. Trump highlighted his Gaza peace plan and claimed credit for ending conflicts, but the committee gives weight to lasting contributions to human rights, democracy, and global stability, rather than media attention or short-term deals.
