With dengue virus cases rising rapidly across India, people are worried about when they are most at risk. A common question is whether dengue mosquitoes bite only in the morning. The truth is more complex, and understanding their behaviour can help prevent infection. Knowing their habits is the first step to staying safe and protecting your family.
Understanding Dengue and Its Carrier
Dengue fever is caused by the bite of mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus (DENV). The main mosquitoes that spread dengue are Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes thrive in urban areas, especially in stagnant water around homes, offices, and public spaces.
Once infected, a mosquito can transmit the virus every time it bites. Unlike Anopheles mosquitoes, which spread malaria at night, Aedes mosquitoes are active at varying times. This often causes misconceptions about when they bite.
Peak Activity
Research from the World Health Organization (WHO) and India’s National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme shows that Aedes aegypti is most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Their peak activity usually occurs two hours after sunrise and a few hours before sunset. However, these mosquitoes can bite throughout the day, particularly in shaded indoor areas with low light. During the monsoon, when breeding sites increase, mosquito activity remains high almost all day, raising the risk of transmission.
Vigilance Matters
Since dengue mosquitoes can bite at different times, prevention must be continuous. Remove stagnant water from flower pots, buckets, utensils, plant trays, and bird baths, and always cover stored water. Installing mesh screens on doors and windows, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and keeping doors closed during peak mosquito activity provide effective physical barriers.
Make sure to apply mosquito repellent all day, not just in the morning. Participating in community clean-up drives and supporting local fumigation efforts helps reduce mosquito populations, and extra precautions should be taken when visiting dengue-affected areas.
Awareness is Key
The belief that dengue mosquitoes bite only in the morning oversimplifies their behaviour. While activity peaks after sunrise and before sunset, bites can occur at any time during the day. Continuous vigilance and preventive measures are essential. Accurate knowledge, combined with action, is the best defence against dengue.
