Delhi Smog Chaos: 61 International Flights Diverted, Over 400 Delayed

Delhi

Dense smog engulfed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on 15 December 2025, causing major disruption at the city’s airport. Sixty-one flights were cancelled, while more than 400 were delayed due to low visibility. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a severe 454 at 7:05 AM, following Sunday’s 461, which was the second-worst December air-quality day on record. At least five flights were diverted, including Argentine football legend Lionel Messi’s flight from Mumbai, which arrived hours late, past 2 PM instead of before 11 AM.

Delhi Airport Issues Travel Advisory

The airport issued a travel advisory warning passengers of potential flight disruptions. Airlines such as IndiGo and Air India urged travellers to check flight status online and allow extra time for road travel due to the dense smog.

The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage IV of the GRAP, banning construction and demolition activities. Meanwhile, the government mandated hybrid schooling for most classes and 50% remote work for office staff.
