Delhi Conducts Cloud Seeding to Clear Smog, Here’s What it Means!

Cloud Seeding

In an urgent attempt to tackle New Delhi’s severe air pollution, Indian authorities carried out a cloud-seeding experiment on Tuesday. A specially equipped aircraft sprayed chemicals into the skies above the capital, aiming to trigger rainfall that could help wash away harmful pollutants. The operation comes as Delhi continues to battle toxic smog levels that have sparked public anger and health concerns. Officials hope that cloud seeding can offer short-term relief, though experts remain sceptical about its long-term effectiveness.

What Exactly is Cloud Seeding?

Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that uses particles such as silver iodide or salt to encourage rainfall. The idea is simple: make the clouds heavier so they burst into rain, clearing dust and pollutants from the air. In partnership with IIT Kanpur, Delhi carried out the experiment to trigger light showers. However, scientists caution that cloud seeding may only clear the air for a few days before pollution levels rise again.

What Experts Say

Environmental experts argue that cloud seeding cannot replace strong, long-term pollution control measures. Krishna Achuta Rao from IIT Delhi explained that while the method may temporarily reduce smog, it does not tackle the root causes — vehicle emissions, crop burning, and industrial smoke. Critics say such experiments are more about showing action than solving the problem. True change, they insist, will come only when India enforces tougher emission laws and adopts cleaner urban practices.
