India has seen a small rise in COVID-19 cases over the past few days. As of now, there are 257 active cases across the country. Most of these are from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. The Union Health Ministry updated the national database on May 12. Officials have said the situation is under control.

The rise in cases is linked to new variants from Southeast Asia. The JN.1 strain, first seen in August 2023, is a descendant of the Omicron variant. It was named a ‘variant of interest’ by the WHO in December 2023. This strain has about 30 mutations. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand have reported a sharp rise in cases. Singapore alone recorded over 14,000 cases in early May. Some celebrities have tested positive. Actress Shilpa Shirodkar confirmed her case. Reports claim that cricketer Travis Head may miss the IPL due to the virus, but this remains unconfirmed.
