National Sports

On July 1, 2025, the government gave its approval to the National Sports Policy 2025. Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw shared an announcement during a press briefing in New Delhi. The new policy replaced the 2001 version and aims to improve India’s sports system and boost the country’s global performance.

Five-Pillar strategy

The policy outlines a plan to improve India’s position in international sports and support the country’s efforts to host the 2036 Olympics. The government drafted the policy after consultations with NITI Aayog, state governments, sports authorities, and experts.

It is based on five core pillars: Positioning India as a global leader in sports, using sports to boost the economy, promoting social inclusion, encouraging more people to take part in sports, and connecting sports with education through NEP 2020. The main aim is to grow a strong sports culture and play sports as an important part of the country’s development.
