5 Big-Budget Films to Watch Out For: Ramayana, Varanasi and More

Films

Big-budget films promise grandeur, scale, and a theatrical experience like no other. While Indian filmmakers often debate the gap between Bollywood budgets and Hollywood spending, a new wave of ambitious desi productions is set to reshape the landscape. With major investments in VFX, world-building, and international shooting, these upcoming films are poised to redefine spectacle cinema in India. Here are five of the biggest productions to look forward to.

5 Big-Budget Movies

Ramayana (Releasing in Two Parts)

Touted as India’s Lord of the Rings moment, Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is among the most expensive films ever made globally. Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, the duology carries a staggering budget of Rs 4,000 crore ($500 million). Producer Namit Malhotra confirmed that both parts together will exceed this amount, surpassing even Hollywood giants like Avatar and Avengers. With cutting-edge technology, massive sets, and a star-studded cast, Ramayana aims to deliver a once-in-a-generation cinematic experience.

Varanasi

SS Rajamouli, already known for mega productions like Baahubali and RRR, is pushing his vision further with Varanasi. Starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, the film spans multiple countries and time periods. Featuring extensive international shoots and large-scale VFX, its budget is expected to exceed Rs 1,000 crore ($113 million). This makes Varanasi Rajamouli’s most expensive project yet and one of the decade’s most anticipated films.

Kalki 2898 AD Sequel

After the record-breaking success of Kalki 2898 AD, director Nag Ashwin is developing Part 2. The first film had a massive budget of over Rs 600 crore ($70 million), the highest for any Indian movie so far. The sequel is expected to match or surpass this scale as it continues the epic sci-fi narrative.

Allu Arjun-Atlee Film

Atlee and Allu Arjun are teaming up for a sci-fi fantasy extravaganza co-starring Deepika Padukone. Reports suggest the film may include a creature-feature-style aliens-versus-warriors subplot. With VFX costs alone estimated at over Rs 500 crore, the total budget is expected to approach Rs 1,000 crore ($113 million), placing it among India’s major big-ticket productions.

Baahubali: The Eternal War (Part 1)

The iconic Baahubali universe expands with a 3D animated film titled Baahubali: The Eternal War. Rajamouli has confirmed a Rs 120 crore ($13.5 million) budget, significant for an Indian animated movie. Following the success of Mahavatar Narsimha (Rs 40 crore budget, Rs 250 crore gross), this project is expected to establish new benchmarks in Indian animation.

These 5 films highlight how Indian cinema is entering a bold new era where storytelling meets large-scale visual spectacle like never before.
