Bangladesh Bans IPL Broadcast After BCCI Asked KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman

Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite ban on the broadcast and promotion of the Indian Premier League. The decision came after the BCCI directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the 2026 season. Rahman was bought by KKR for Rs 9.2 crore at the auction. He was asked to be released, citing “recent developments”, though no specific reason was officially given.

Bangladesh Bans IPL Broadcast

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting termed the decision unjustified, stating that it had deeply hurt public sentiment. In an official order issued on January 5, broadcasters and advertisers were instructed to immediately suspend all IPL-related content in the country. The government described the ban as a step taken in the public interest.

The controversy escalated amid reports of rising anti-Bangladesh sentiment in India. Threats linked to concerns over communal violence were also cited. Bangladesh has approached the ICC and urged it to shift its 2026 T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka. Neither the BCCI nor the IPL has issued an official response so far.
