‘Baby John’ is a compelling family drama that combines action, emotion, and thought-provoking social commentary. Starring Varun Dhawan in a completely new avatar, the film revolves around the beautiful father-daughter bond and tackles sensitive issues like violence against women. Varun, known for his charming roles, shifts gears into the action genre with ease, showcasing his versatility. Actress Wamiqa Gabbi’s performance, though brief, stands out. The film also marks the Bollywood debut of South Indian actress Keerthy Suresh.
Performances
Varun Dhawan shines in his role, shifting from his usual chocolate boy image to a more intense action hero. His performance is phenomenal, proving his versatility in the action genre and he should for sure do more action films.
Wamiqa Gabbi, though limited in screen time, impresses with her action scenes, and it would have been great to see more of her action sequences even maybe with Varun.
Keerthy Suresh, making her Bollywood debut, does a decent job as Varun’s love interest in her fairly minimal role.
Jackie Shroff delivers a stellar performance as a formidable villain, exuding strength and menace in every scene. His commanding presence and intense portrayal elevate the character, making him a memorable antagonist. His unique blend of charisma and grit adds a layer of depth to the villainous role.
What went wrong
However, the film does face some pacing issues, with frequent song interludes that disrupt the flow and make the narrative drag a little. The girl playing Varun’s daughter, though adorable, has dialogue delivery issues, making her words difficult to understand.
Conclusion
At a runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes, the film feels a bit long, but it keeps the audience engaged throughout. Overall, ‘Baby John’ is a wholesome family entertainer with a mix of drama, action, and social commentary. It’s a one-time watch that would make for a good family outing.
