After ‘Baby John’, Salman Khan’s ‘Sikandar’ is another south remake! Is Bollywood running out of ideas?

Sikandar, Baby John

It seems like South Indian directors are increasingly bringing their films to Bollywood as remakes which is raising questions of originality in the film industry. Director Atlee’s 2016 Tamil film ‘Theri’, starring Thalapathy Vijay, was later adapted into the Bollywood film ‘Baby John’, featuring Varun Dhawan in which Atlee did the storytelling. Similarly, Salman Khan’s upcoming film ‘Sikandar’, directed by A.R. Murugadoss, is set to release on Eid 2025. The film is speculated to be a remake of Murugadoss’ 2018 hit ‘Sarkar’, starring Thalapathy Vijay. This trend of remaking South Indian blockbusters for Bollywood audiences raises a key question: Is Bollywood struggling with fresh, original content? While remakes can introduce successful regional stories to a larger audience, the constant recycling of plots suggests a lack of creativity and innovation, potentially stifling the growth of fresh narratives in both industries.
