Ustad Zakir Hussain was a renowned Indian tabla player, composer, percussionist, music producer, and film actor, widely regarded as one of the greatest tabla players of all time. The eldest son of legendary tabla maestro Alla Rakha, Hussain’s contributions to Indian classical music were unparalleled. In 1990, he was honored with the Government of India’s Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, followed by the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and Ratna Sadsya in 2018. In 1999, he received the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the United States National Endowment for the Arts. Hussain earned seven Grammy Award nominations, winning four. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023, recognizing his immense influence on global music.
