The Supreme Court on Monday put its earlier Aravalli judgment on hold after raising concerns that parts of the ruling and the expert committee report were being misunderstood. A vacation bench led by CJI Surya Kant said the definitions approved last month needed further clarity. The court stressed that environmental consequences must be carefully reviewed before any change is allowed. This is especially important where mining activities are concerned, given the ecological sensitivity of the Aravalli range.
Supreme Court Holds Its Own Aravalli Judgment
The court said a new expert panel would be formed to study the environmental impact of the earlier recommendations. It also questioned whether the revised definitions could open more areas to mining. Until a clearer assessment is made, the Aravalli judgment and related findings will remain in abeyance, with the case scheduled for hearing in January 2026.
