Indian Army Can Access Instagram but With Restrictions: Viewing Allowed, Posting and Messaging Prohibited

Indian Army

The Indian Army has recently amended its social media policy, allowing personnel to access Instagram, but strictly in a view-only mode. Soldiers can now view and monitor content on the platform solely for information awareness. Under the revised guidelines, personnel are explicitly barred from communicating views, opinions, or messages on Instagram. Responsibility for the correct and secure use of the platform rests entirely with the individual soldier.

The Army has also reiterated warnings against using VPNs, torrent websites, cracked software, and anonymous web proxies due to associated security risks.

Guidelines for Other Platforms

Similar restrictions continue to apply to other platforms, including YouTube and X, where only passive consumption is allowed. Other social media and messaging platforms have specific rules:

  • Skype and WhatsApp allow the exchange of unclassified general information.
  • Telegram and Signal permit content sharing only with known contacts, with users responsible for verifying recipients.
  • YouTube, X, and Quora restrict posting or uploading, allowing only passive consumption.
  • LinkedIn may be used solely to upload résumés for career purposes.

Balancing Awareness with Operational Security

The policy update reflects the Army’s efforts to balance digital awareness with operational security. It allows soldiers to stay informed about social media trends without exposing themselves or their units to potential vulnerabilities.

Over the years, the Indian Army has periodically revised its social media guidelines, covering platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram. Restrictions were tightened following multiple incidents in which personnel were targeted through honey traps, leading to inadvertent leaks of sensitive information.
