Train Ticket Prices to Rise as Railway Ministry Announces Fare Hike from Dec 26

Train Ticket Prices

The Indian Railway Ministry has officially announced a revision in passenger train fares that will come into effect from December 26, 2025. This is the second fare hike this year after a similar increase in July. The ministry said the move is aimed at balancing affordability for passengers while ensuring the financial sustainability of railway operations. While long-distance travellers will see a marginal rise in train ticket prices, suburban services and daily commuters will not be affected.

Key Highlights of the Fare Hike

  • Ordinary class fares to rise by 1 paise per km for journeys beyond 215 km; no increase for travel up to 215 km.
  • Second class ordinary fares to increase in steps: Rs 5 (216–750 km), Rs 10 (751–1250 km), Rs 15 (1251–1750 km), and Rs 20 (1751–2250 km).
  • Sleeper class ordinary and first class ordinary fares revised uniformly at 1 paise per km.
  • Fare lists at railway stations are to be updated to reflect the new pricing.
  • Mail and express trains to see a fare hike of 2 paise per km across both non-AC and AC classes.
  • Suburban services and all-season tickets to remain unchanged under the revised fare structure.
  • New train ticket prices are applicable only to tickets booked on or after December 26, 2025; earlier bookings remain unaffected.
