US Strikes Islamic State Militants in Nigeria at Government’s Request

The United States has carried out a targeted strike against Islamic State militants in north-west Nigeria. The operation was conducted at the request of the Nigerian government, according to U.S. President Donald Trump and the American military. U.S. officials said the militant group had been carrying out violent attacks in the region, including assaults targeting civilians.

Nigeria’s foreign ministry confirmed that the strike was part of ongoing security cooperation between the two countries. It involved intelligence sharing and strategic coordination aimed at weakening militant networks operating in the country’s north-west.

Islamic State Camps Targeted Operation

A U.S. defence official said multiple ISIS camps were targeted. Nigeria acknowledged the strike while stressing the complexity of its security situation, as armed groups have attacked both Muslims and Christians.
